ThePokémonfranchise has been enjoyed by million of fans around the world , for over two decades .
If you get up in the heights of late - mid-nineties Pokémania , you in all probability did n’t just act as the secret plan . You collected the card , used the lunch boxwood with Pikachu ’s grin boldness on it , watched the show , kip beneath the bedsheets blazon with spooky - bet Drowzees and Hypnos ( hold back , that ’s scary , forget we say that) … Pokémonwasn’t just a fandom . It was a mode of lifespan , and it still is for many of us .
Looking back at the other 24-hour interval of the franchise is a semisweet experience , however . Yes , Pokémon Red and Blueblessed us with the original 151 Pokémon , a group that so - call ‘ genwunners ’ still insist are the only ones deserving rile with . With the welfare of hindsight , though , it ’s clear that the early installments were in dire need of all variety of caliber of life history melioration ( as we account over onThe Gamer ) .
It was multiplication IV that really give up thing into high gear . Pokémon Diamond , Pearl , andPlatinumbrought us the ( almost ) unlimited bag system of rules , which finally saved us from endless Resident Evil - style armoury - wrangling just to grab that Potion . The physical / particular split was a real godsend too .
Most significantly , propagation IV sum up a sum of 107 new Pokémon to the mix . As always , they testify to be a mixed travelling bag . From Wormadam to Staraptor , from Chatot to Froslass , rent ’s take a look at theDiamond , PearlandPlatinumPokémon that are just irredeemable , along with the ones that are surprisingly effective if give a chance .
NO ONE SHOULD CATCH: Burmy
You ’d be forgive for dismissing Burmy at first coup d’oeil . Encountering it very early on in the biz , you ’ll see it pop up on your screen for the first time and you ’ll in all probability think , what the heck is this flyspeck short leafy hunk of unusefulness ? Excuse me while Idon’tnab it for my team right away .
Now , we ’re not saying that you should ever judge anything by appearances . All we ’re say is that you ’re absolutely darn right on on this one . While it ’s quite neat that Burmy can dramatize unlike forms reckon on where it last combat ( and evolve into one of three different forms of Wormadam as a result ) , it has a rough movepool and stats that are just as bad .
TOTALLY UNDERRATED: Bibarel
No , badly . Stop that snarky sniggering . You wo n’t be express joy when a +6 Attack Bibarel with +6 Defense is rampaging through your team , like Godzilla through a delicate china replica of Tokyo .
Yes , Bidoof and Bibarel are notorious as one of the worst thing that generation IV convey to the table , but there ’s some incredible voltage here . Thanks to the Simple power ( which double all stat boosts and drops ) , it just needs a couplet of tour of Curse to become more powerful and tanky than something that look this ridiculous ever has any right field to be .
Of course , it is n’t easy to set that up , but in the right situation , Bibarel can be a powerhouse .
NO ONE SHOULD CATCH: Phione
We do it what you ’re thinking , friends . Technically talk , it is n’t really possible to ‘ get ’ Phione . The polite matter would ’ve been not to point that out and embarrass us in front of everybody .
What we ’re getting at here is that there ’s really no need for Phione to exist . It ’s super confusing that it does , in fact . You see , Phione is the result of Manaphy breeding with a ditto mark , and nobody knows why this fabled Pokémon can spawn in the first place ( it ’s the only one that can ) .
If Phione a infant form of Manaphy or something ? It does n’t acquire into one , just keep back those sub - par stats forever .
TOTALLY UNDERRATED: Honchkrow
They do n’t call this beast the Big Boss Pokémon for nothing , friends .
Murkrow does n’t look like much , does it ? Its beldame - like design is cool , if a niggling cliché , and it can do some satanic thing with its Prankster power , but a powerhouse ? perfectly not .
Somewhere around the clock time , it used that Dusk Stone to germinate , however , it must ’ve been binge - watching the Rocky movies or something . A good few training montages afterward , and Honchkrow was born .
At base 125 Attack , this matter is deceivingly strong , and it learns a good mix of richly - powered moves to get the caper done . Throw in the Moxie power ( which gives it an Attack rise whenever it knocks out a Pokémon ) , and you ’ve got a force of nature that can snowball quickly .
Its stop number is only base 70 and its Sucker Punch can be predictable , but if you could work around this , you ’ll see what Honchkrow can really do .
NO ONE SHOULD CATCH: Chatot
Chatot ’s a bit of a tough one to place . To be wholly bonnie to the little guy , it ’s amazingly fast and has a reasonably potent Special Attack ( base 91 and base 92 respectively ) . It can knock some heads when it really postulate to , particularly when you debate that it has entree to muscular move like Hyper Voice right from the off .
That ’s the full extent of its usefulness , though , unless you want to throw in its signature move Chatter ( which involved an odd mechanic that gave it a high chance to flurry the louder a transcription through the microphone was ) . Outside of that , you ’re just off waiting , because a far better music - note - based Pokémon was on the way next coevals ( Meloetta ) .
NO ONE SHOULD CATCH: Lumineon
urine - types are the most numerous of all , so it ’s no surprise that generation IV added a huge crop of Modern single . We ’ve already looked at Bibarel and Phione , but there were a lot more besides .
One of which was just about the most average and vanilla Water ‘ Monday you could possibly reckon : Finneon . Its design is n’t specially bad ( when it evolve into Lumineon , it ’s quite refined - looking ) , but it ’s just … it ’s a Pisces the Fishes . A fish with middle - of - the - route stats mighty across the board .
Whichever role you select from it , there ’ll be another Pokémon that can plausibly do that job substantially . It ’s not easy being a jack - of - all - deal in this dealership , friends .

TOTALLY UNDERRATED: Luxray
Fundamentally , Luxray is very similar to Honchkrow . It boasts around the same level of Attack ( base 120 in this case ) and is pretty darn utile if you’re able to turn around its lacklustre Speed ( which is radical 70 , exactly the same as Honchkrow ’s ) .
The trouble is , this Electric - character has no access to STAB antecedence . Or any precedency at all , in fact , unless you need to engender Quick Attack onto it . Which you do n’t . That definitely hurts its viability .
Nevertheless , it ’s arguably one of the best Pokémon design of generation IV , and it catch a surprising multifariousness of moves to keep opponents off sentry go .
NO ONE SHOULD CATCH: Cherubi
As was the grammatical case with Burmy , Bidoof and the like , warning signal bells should be ringing in your head as soon as you catch peck of this thing . yield , evolution does wonders for Pokémon , and the most pathetic - look can become inflict ( Magikarp into Gyarados , for instance ) , but some designs are just irredeemable .
Cherubi looks like the kind of Pokémon that will have to evolve six times just to become as threatening as a catch a wink Weedle . woefully , it evolves just once , and Cherrim really is n’t up to much either .
It has a totally lovely Sunshine shape , which it adopts in the Lord’s Day , but that ’s as far as it goes .
NO ONE SHOULD CATCH: Combee
If Nintendo has learn us anything , it ’s that putting super - cute smiley face on non-living object is the way frontwards . In the Mushroom Kingdom , cloud , hills and just about everything else feature a gleeful grin . It ’s adorable and welcoming , and about the most Nintendo thing you ’ll ever see .
Game Freak seems to have catch on to that whole concept too . The remaining little honeycomb - bee - thing that is Combee has not one , but three happy little faces . Funnily enough , this does not translate to battle art .
Vespiquen has reasonably good defensive stats and some interesting relocation , but it ’s countenance down by its typing . Only female Combee can develop , though , leaving the male one without any of these redeem qualities .
TOTALLY UNDERRATED: Gastrodon
Gastrodon is a curious casing . It ’s one of those Pokémon that may not fathom like very much on composition , but can perform amazingly well in the correct circumstances .
Water / Ground is one of the salutary typing in the game , being weak only to Grass . It ’s a 4x weakness , so it ’ll faint if it so much as encounter a blade of green goddess out of a car window ( not that it can drive , being a slug , so we should n’t really have bother bringing that up ) , but with thrifty use , this thing can be incredibly efficient .
With access to Recover , too , it makes a great tank and is especially effective against pelting team ( assimilate Water moves with Storm Drain ) . If they do n’t have Ludicolo , they have a trouble .
