Everyone knows theMarvel Cinematic Universeis made up of a roster of actor as wonderful and as divers as the characters they trifle . And most of these actors have constitute success outside of the MCU as well as within it . Some in other , billion - buck gross box seat role smashes and some in more arthouse and observational transportation .

But sometimes these operation fly under the radar of even the most ardent Marvel Cinematic Universe fan . Below are ten performances by MCU actors outside of the MCU . 5 underrated performances by doer in the MCU that you may have missed and 5 that you really should avoid …

(Best) Paul Bettany inMaster and Commander

Not only an underrated Paul Bettany role but an underrated film all around ; Peter Weir’sMaster and Commanderis a fantastically enjoyable adventure moving-picture show . The lead performance by Russell Crowe as cocky ship captain Jack Aubrey is great , but it ’s Bettany as the   ship ’s scholarly surgeon Stephen Maturin who really shines . He ’s funny and wizard and the back and forth between him and Crowe is fun to watch . Outside   of the MCU , not many Marvel fans will be familiar with this but it really is Bettany ’s better employment . The flick is deserving checking out for Bettany ’s public presentation alone but the repose of it is also awesome and despite the naturalistic narrative , refreshingly low-cal - hearted .

(Worst) Michael Keaton inNeed For Speed

First things first , Michael Keaton isalwaysawesome . Whatever the quality of the movie around him , Michael Keaton can always be bank on to deliver a memorable   performance . And in the MCU , his bout as Adrian Toomes ( or The Vulture ) is one of the just villain performances in the entire MCU . But his role in the 2014Need For Speedleaves a bite more to be desired . Keaton is his usual frenzied self but for some unidentified ground , the performance is telephone in . No , literally . Well Skyped in , as the role player hand over the entirety of his performance over a computer blind . More Michael Keaton is always good but it helps if he’sactuallythere .

(Best) Robert Downey Jr inKiss Kiss Bang Bang

Before Robert Downey Jr and director Shane Black teamed up for the ( underappreciated)Iron Man 3,they worked together on the wonderful neo - noir film , Kiss Kiss Bang Bang . It follows deplorable and accidental actor Harry Lockheart ( Downey Jr ) and his PI friend Gay Perry ( an equally wild Val Kilmer ) through LA ’s seedy underbelly .

The wisecracking Tony Stark that Marvel fans know and erotic love was much have a bun in the oven in this movie . Downey Jr is the perfect man for Black ’s wisecracking , laugh a minute script . He effortlessly switches from hilarious   to heartbreaking when the picture demands it . Darker than his MCU stuff , but a must watch for any team - Iron Man fans .

(Worst) Samuel L. Jackson inThe Spirit

As   funny book movies go , not many role player have had as much success as Samuel L. Jackson . As the MCU ’s Nick Fury , Jackson has appeared in nearly one-half of the MCU cinematic end product . Outside of this , he ’s twist in big performances in the the likes of ofKingsmanand M. Night Shyamalan realist superhero pic , UnbreakableandGlass . But his performances have n’t always been top notch , as anyone who has seen 2008’sThe Spiritcan secern you . Based on the Will Eisner comic strip of the same name , the Frank Miller - directed flop was a critically and commercial failure . Unfortunately , even Jackson could n’t hightail it the cinema whole , turning in an uncharacteristically bored and boring performance .

(Best) Scarlett Johansson inUnder The Skin

A good chunk of MCU cat members are marvelous , accolade - pull ahead worker . Between them , they ’ve take part in their fair share of experimental and arthouse movies ,   often adventure their more clean - cut image established in the Marvel movies . But no actor has perhaps done that more than theBlack Widowherself , Scarlett Johansson , starring in Johnathan Glazer ’s tiptop - experimental , A-one - disturbingUnder the tegument .

Not only did the function call for actual , real life , candid camera fashion filming , but the obtuse storytelling and horrific visuals mean it ’s not precisely go to pleaseAvengersfans . Johansson , however , is magnificent in the cinema . She ’s creepy-crawly and does some horrible things but you also sense for her - all due to Johansson ’s expressive operation . Her standalone Black Widow picture ca n’t descend soon enough .

(Worst) Benedict Cumberbatch inThe Fifth Estate

Benedict Cumberbatch has provided audiences with some outstanding public presentation over the twelvemonth . As the eponymousSherlock , he ’s amused one thousand thousand of fan around the cosmos with what might be the best ever rendering of the fiber . His very own MCU execution inDoctor Strangewas also magnificent ( and underrated ) . But his eldritch portrayal of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2013’sThe Fifth Estate , was never going to win him any honor . perhaps is the off - place wigging , or the dodgy accent , or the fact that Assange himselfasked Cumberbatch to outstrip himself from the moving picture , but something just did n’t feelrightabout the public presentation . fortuitously Cumberbatch was soon on to bigger and better things .

(Best) Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen inWind River

Now this one is a tie because , as circumstances would have it , Wind Riverstars two MCU actors and both turn in career - well performances . The film follow Renner ’s Cory Lambert , a wildlife officer in Wyoming , who finds the body of an 18 - year - old adult female on an American Indian reservation . Rookie FBI broker Jane Banner ( Olsen ) is call in and the two squad up to get to the bottom of the murder instance . Renner ’s carrying into action as a quietly grieving father is raw and heartbreaking while Olsen ’s earnest but in over her head FBI agent is the heart of the picture show .   Written and take by Taylor Sheridan , anyone who saw Sheridan ’s previous screenwriting credits ( Sicario , Hell or High Water ) will be familiar with the sort of fierce neo - western trend ofWind River .

(Worst) Josh Brolin inJonah Hex

Before Josh Brolin hit it big with his downright amazing functioning as ' The Mad Titan ' Thanos inAvengers : Infinity War , he starred in another comic volume adaption . Jonah Hextells the story of a Confederate soldier ( Brolin ) who , after being bewray , marred and leave for dead by his command officer , bring his revenge as a bloody-minded premium hunty . Despite the promising source material , the picture show was a vital and commercial nonstarter . Brolin ’s operation as the jumper cable is lightyears away from the nuanced and likable performance as Thanos .

Perhaps it ’s the dodgy make - up or perhaps Brolin just did n’t care but his take on the supernatural amplitude huntsman is bored and stilted .

(Best) Chris Evans inSnowpiercer

If you live in most western territories , you ’re probably not too familiar withSnowpiercer . Boon Jong - Ho ’s 2013 graphical novel adaptation was unfortunately cut to shreds   by   the   Weinstein Company and never see a true English lyric sack until long after . And that ’s a real shame becauseSnowpierceris an astonishing film . Violent , funny , aroused and scarily prescient , it ’s truly one of a variety and it ’s Captain America himself , Chris Evan ’s , who holds it all together . His public presentation as Curtis , leader of the resistance fighting their path up through a dystopian train where the rich experience up front in comforter and the poor are ram in the back and left to die . It ’s a   vocation - defining performance from Evan ’s . His heartrending speech at the end of the celluloid where he uncover the lengths he ’s been thrust to go to survive is grievous .

(Worst) Robert Downey Jr inThe Shaggy Dog

Only a mere few months after his life history - good public presentation inKiss Kiss Bang Bang , Robert Downey Jr turned in what might be his life history worst . The 2006 Tim Allen comedy not only hasthe unsound notice of any film everbut also the worst Downey Jr performance and one he ’d rather you forgot . A remake of the 1959 film of the same name , The Shaggy Dogfollows Allen ’s dominion attorney Dave Douglas as he gets wrapped up in some malevolent genetical experiment , direct by Dr Kozak ( an inauspicious Downey Jr ) . Downey Jr give it his all , he really does . But not only is he not convincing as the villain but he flies between bored and hammy in an blink of an eye . However , a scene that sees Robert Downey Jr jump around a courtroom like a dog almost nominate the film worthy of recommending . Fortunately , we do n’t cogitate Downey Jr lose too much sleep over this as a couple of year laterIron Manwas released and cemented him as one of the good modern - 24-hour interval moving picture stars .
