Anthony Maras and Armie Hammer Hotel Mumbai Screen Rant Interview

give thanks you , thank you . It ’s as harrowing as it is cheer . I wanted to ask you something , which is why I ’m here . When you ’re doing this film that is so deadly serious , completely consecutive , how is the air on set in between takes and in between day , even ? Is it morbid ? Do you guy rope have a adept clock time in between pellet ? What is that experience ?

Anthony Maras : I cerebrate it depends on the actors involve . Some , like Armie , are able to switch on and off between takes and get straight back into it . Others , like Amandeep Singh , who play one of the young gunman , go full method acting . In fact , with the gunmen , we had a bit of a tactic ; in between takes , because the three of them had never really acted on a film of this ordered series before , they would just stand and literally just stare at the bulwark .

Armie Hammer : It was really disconcert . They just stared at the walls . Also , one thing that Anthony did … There were giant speakers hidden around the exercise set , and he would have the remote on his phone , and every now and then would push a button , and the sound of machinegun flack would break out , or , like , grenade . So , like , in between takes , you never had a import to just relax . You always heard gunfire or grenades when you were n’t expecting it . It kept everybody really tense .

Armie Hammer in Hotel Mumbai

Anthony Maras : On edge , yeah .

Armie Hammer : You sadist .

The whole movie , from start to conclusion , is just bloodless - knuckle tension . I was on the border of my seat the whole time . Was there ever a business organization that it would be too much , or did you feel a responsibility to depict things as they were ?

Anthony Maras : I think , counter - balanced with the tension , is a tale about intense humanity , this idea of people of all different races , religions , ethnicity , coming together and establish dependable courage and heroism . And , I think , so as to show the strength and resiliance that these people had , you have to understand the depths of what they went through . So the intent was always to not shy away from the saturation . This is a terror attack . We did n’t want to shy by from the realism of that . At the same prison term , you involve the dark to apprize the light , and there is a lot of light in this film . These multitude , who come out the other side of these attack , had transformative experiences . In many display case , they certify that they were not go to be cowed by this . The Taj Hotel was reopened twenty - one months after the attacks . You had this extraordinary thing occur ; you had this figure of speech , which we have at the end of the picture , or the survivor of these attacks , coming together on the grand stairway , which was a scene of gunshot and flack and dud clap , and all the survivors who still worked at the Taj , come back , along with many who come back from other parts of the world , and they locked arms in a symbol of solidarity . And more so than that , just three hebdomad after the attack , the Taj Hotel and Hemant Oberoi , together , reopened the first of the twelve restaurants after the attacks . And you had people throughout all of Mumbai who come together to receive this .

The expounding in this film is mostly fork out through news reports and what seem like real footage from the attack . Was that all existent ? Were any of the news reports staged for the film , or was that all real footage ?

Anthony Maras : No , that was raw footage that was used . We went through hundreds of hour to get that , to add a sentience of authenticity to it , and to demonstrate that this was a real thing that people were dealing with .
