Scarface
Equalizer 2director Antoine Fuqua is trying to convert Denzel Washington to ill-use into Al Pacino ’s shoe for his plannedScarfaceremake . Universal ’s update ofScarfacehas been on the table for years , with multiple manager and writers coming and going as the moving picture has languish in development Scheol . Fuqua himself hasleft the labor onceonly to later return , and iscurrently attached as directorwith Gareth Dunnet - Alcocer onboard as writer .
Released in 1983 , Pacino’sScarfacewas itself a remakeof a 1932 film starring Paul Muni as a Chicago mobster roughly model after Al Capone . The 1983 version , save by Oliver Stone and directed by Brian De Palma , changed the circumstance to Miami and - controversially - throw up Pacino as a Cuban - American mobster who heighten to become a cocaine kingpin . note for its wildly over - the - top violence , De Palma’sScarfacehas become a cult classic and Pacino ’s character an icon .

Many actors have been mentioned as possible candidates to take over the title role in Universal ’s long - gestating remake ofScarface . Director Antoine Fuqua , who as antecedently mentioned is currently bond to the undertaking , has one person in mind for that role but unfortunately this person is reluctant to do it . Speaking toTHR , Fuqua said he ’s tried to convert his frequent collaborationist Denzel Washington to become the Modern Scarface but the actor is not thrilled about the idea . Fuqua said :
My dream is for him to be Scarface . He express mirth sometimes and he kind of go , “ [ Al ] Pacino did a not bad job ! I do n’t want to do that . ” I ’m prod him . I ’m trying to nudge him into doing it .
Diego Luna was previously reportedas theScarfacelead , but given Fuqua ’s remark , it seems Luna has not in fact been contrive in the part and it ’s still unfastened . Fuqua and Washington of trend first work together on 2001’sTraining Day , a film that garnered Washington his second career Oscar winnings . The pair reunited in 2014 forThe Equalizer , a movie version of the eighties TV show star Edward Woodward . In 2016 , Fuqua and Washington team up up for the Western remakeThe Magnificent Seven , and this year they ’re back together again forThe Equalizer 2 , Washington ’s first vocation sequel . Equalizer 2got off to a hard start at the box role , beating outMamma Mia 2to claim the#1 spot in its opening weekend .
Given their very successful history together , it seems like an obvious idea for Fuqua and Washington to reunify again forScarface . Washington ’s bearing would also contribute the movie moment legitimacy both at the box place and during awards season . However , it ’s easy to interpret why Washington would be hesitant to take on the role after Pacino already gave an iconic performance in the 1983 version . Sure , Fuqua ’s take on the story would naturally be much different and Washington would doubtless have a chance to re - interpret the character in his own way . But even so , Pacino ’s shadow looms large and stepping into that tail might not be a challenge Washington feels like taking on at this point in his career .
