WARNING : Major spoilers for Days Gone .
Days Gone ’s story is quite thrilling , but its terminate turn of events ruin all the quality development that Deacon St. John work up up . It ’s a recollective path to salvation for Deacon ( withsix minute of cutscenes ) , set in the backdrop of the " zombie " apocalypse . sprucely , the setting of Deacon ’s story furnish the opportunity for rich grapheme moments and difficult moralistic option .
But Sony Bend takes the easy way of life , opting to never ram Deacon to truly grapple with the mistakes that he ’s made . or else , he coasts by on his bike past any meaningful change to his self - righteous and obsessed loner posture . take in a character grow and become better is part of the reason games likeThe Last of Us , Red Dead Redemption 2 , andUncharted 4are so satisfying . Deacon fits in the same archetype of those games ' champion : curmudgeonly survivor with occasional quick wit . Deacon beginsDays Gonein quest of his wife , Sarah . He blame himself for what he believes to be her expiry , having localise her on a eggbeater alone to a political science facility . There are slew of turns in Deacon ’s lookup for Sarah . Through doing runs and bounties for survivor , Deacon go to better know the other people in his vast , bleak world ofDays Gone , as well as the sacrifices they had to make . But like Deacon , Days Goneisn’t actually concerned in these subplots or side characters . People like Rikki and Iron Mike are just bagatelle , assistants to guide Deacon to his ultimate goal .
Days Gone’s Ending Twist
In one ofDays Gone ’s many twist , Deacon is revealed to have been correct all along in his compulsion : Sarah is still alive . Not only is she still animated , but Deacon finds her without any pomp and circumstance . Their reunion is a strange one ; the married man and wife have to hide that they know each other due to the militaristic regime in which they find themselves . It may make horse sense in context , but it is unpleasant to watch . At this head , Clarence Shepard Day Jr. Gonehas spent over 20 hour edifice to this moment and it just … sort of chance .
While the two later make - up ( and get some alone fourth dimension ) , this panorama still leaves a bad appreciation in the role player ’s sass . If Deacon ’s journeying was think to be psychotherapeutic , almost wish - fulfillment , then it seems like a short pick to make their reunification so lackluster . And if the inverse is true , thatDays Gonehopes to reveal that things have changed in two years and Sarah is not the same person that Deacon knew , then the commitment to this thought rapidly fall to shreds .
When Deacon finds Sarah after two years of searching , she is working in a militia base on Wizard Island , Oregon . Apparently due to her abrasive position and a turn of post - government sexism , she is referred to as the " Wizard Island Witch . " We are told that the end of the world ( and the guess loss of her husband ) has hardened Sarah , but we never see it . surely , she can fire a accelerator pedal now , but she still relies on Deacon to economise her legion time .
All of this might have been forgiven if Deacon lose her again . The oppressiveness of the office - Revelation of Saint John the Divine is n’t just , but given the often bleak tone of the game , this might have been a more fitting ending . To determine his wife alive just to see her die and be forced to come to terms with a new lifetime . Instead , Deacon and Sarah defeat all the ( human ) bad guys and ride off into the sunset together .
Why This Days Gone Twist Is Bad
Perhaps the biggest shame is that thisDays Gonetwist is cushioned by two other twists that really do a much better job of examining grief . The first being the reveal that the leader of the Rippers - and , therefore , the actions of the integral gang - is really spurred by the actions of Deacon and Booker . The third is that Sarah ’s inquiry at employment was indirectly responsible for for the freaker pestilence . These reveals fundamentally empathize the ideas of compulsion thatDays Gonesomehow seems to miss entirely .
When Booker and Deacon keep Jesse down in a flashback , and their Mongrel leader Jack burn off his tattoo , the consultation has little linguistic context for the events . It ’s inauspicious that Sony Bend did n’t make this a playable moment , push the thespian to actually make the active decision to book Jesse and watch , perhaps more tight , as Jack branded him for living . This in the end terminate up being Jesse ’s ( now Carlos ) signature move , the scarring of survivors . His belief that humans should be more like freakers is directly tied to the horrid event that befell him before the apocalypse ; he thinks we do n’t deserve salvation . But Deacon learns very niggling from his encounter with the Rippers , never visibly accepting answerability for the last his action led to .
Sarah , like Jesse , also has a more complete arc than Deacon , even though it is n’t fully examine . Her guiltiness over the creation of a living dead disease evaporates in the next scene . She has an emotional reaction to her attempt at a curative not exercise and then - poof . We get the well-chosen end . day Gonedoesn’t come along to be concerned in explore any mysterious katharsis , and is n’t that what the Revelation is all about ?
Deacon gets everything he wanted and never grapples with substantiate what he wanted has shift . Sarah is alive ; she still loves him , and they get to be together . All the friendships he has fostered , the employment he has done , they really finish up just being dressing to this main account . He uses people to get to his wife and there are no consequences to this action at law . Even when Boozer appears to have died after a self - sacrificial play , he promptly resurface . He ’s fine , the biz see you . Deacon has a well-chosen conclusion .
But after all the bad that Deacon has done , and the mise en scene of an apocalypse to explore it , it ’s disappointing thatDays Gonedoesn’t ask a more important interrogation than , " Will Deacon get the life he want ? " Deacon permit multitude die just to find his wife again . He killed and he cared about no one but himself ( and Boozer ) . So when Deacon gets the life he want , why doesn’tDays Goneask if Deacon even deserves it ?
