The Black Order created forAvengers : Infinity Warwere seriously unsatisfying for risible fans , but the directors do have a reason for so dramatically First State - powering the so - called Children of Thanos .
The average Marvel movie fan may just take the four henchmen -Ebony Maw , Proxima Midnight , Corvus Glaive , and Cull Obsidian- as typical goons of any comic book scoundrel . That ’s the nonaged purpose they in the end play in the movie , after all . But in the comics these four were some of the most terrific bod of Marvel ’s universe , and fierce lieutenants of Thanos ' army .
Thankfully , the director ofInfinity Warnow explains why the comic book versions just would n’t have make for the picture .
Even with all the ways that the movie was a dream come true for Marvel Comic devotee , there ’s no denying that when the end deferred payment rolled , it was obviousthe Black Order was the decrepit part ofInfinity War . Not just because they were never explained , or given any backstory whatsoever , but because they demonstrate to be simple-minded to beat ( when each was a good - Thanos degree terror when introduce in Jonathan Hickman’sInfinitycomic series ) .
The household video freeing ofInfinity War(digital only until August 14 ) has brought with it some explanation , thanks to the film ’s commentary track with the directors and writers . While he ’s clearly a fan of the beginning material , director Joe Russo explains why the movie version of the Black Order ended up being not just sapless , but possess of exclusively different powers :
The Black Order , in particular , we worked hard to adjust them to the Marvel Cinematic Universe . In the Hickman run , I thought the character were too powerful . And nobody want the hoagy - villain to outshine the scoundrel . And we conform their power set so that they lined up in a way that was more interesting with our heroes . Which is why Maw is a wizard … he can control things on a molecular level .

The ingenious Ebony Maw went up against a fellow " genius " in Doctor Strange . The hulking Cull Obsidian wound up battling … well , the Hulk . And the twain of Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive put their fighting skills to act upon against Captain America ’s Secret Avengers first , and other warrior in the final battle .
And what a conjunction , Corvus Glaive ’s noted scythe is re - imagined as simply a weapon capable of wounding Vision ( in a room that is somehow unsufferable for him to repair ) .
There were earlier order of payment of the script , I suppose , with the Black Order … in a more stylised bill of exchange , where we did backstories for each of them . Ultimately the movie was getting too herd , too hard to watch . In the Book there ’s a backstory between Proxima and Corvus , that they ’re married . Only suggest at in the slim way [ in Infinity War ] by the fact that they are partner off up to find a Stone , and the way she responds when Corvus gets jab by Natasha .
There ’s no motion that fans will want to see the back stories and origins that were flashed back to in early script , just to see how much of the mirthful informant textile would have wound up intact , scrapped , or reimagined . But with its runtime already push the terminal point of a wonder - sized blockbuster , it was either lose the baddie ’s back story along with the scenes catching up with the Avengers … or take out even more of what ended up in the finished cut .
In the conclusion , the event was a radical of villains who felt as one - line as they inevitably had to , posing only as much of a scourge as they involve to for Thanos to nobble up one Infinity Stone after another , and keep the heroes busy until the plot crescendo - ed toits final Wakanda battle . ConsideringMarvel ’s baddie problem in past movies , it ’s a sacrifice fans have proven unforced to accept .
