Jason Mitchell gained nationwide recognition and decisive kudos when he depict Eazy - E in the 2015 biopicStraight Outta Compton . He went on to star in the critically acclaimed Mudbound and the Hollywood blockbusterKong : Skull Island . His latest pic isThe Mustang , the story of a fierce convict who rediscovers his own humans by check wild horses . Mitchell toy Henry , an outgoing fellow convict and magic rider .
Screen Rant : First of all , Jason , extolment on the moving-picture show . I ’ve fuck off to know , what bestow you to this project and how did you link up with your character ?
Jason Mitchell : What brought me to this task actually was [ Laure de Clermont - Tonnerre ] . She was a really swelled sports fan of mine already . And I ’m a lover of hers . But what really connected me to it was , like no matter what situation I ’m in , in life , I always have a smile on my face . Like things could be going in the worst , and I ’m always going to be smile and everybody knows that . So , to have somebody sort of take that and summate that to the script already was like , “ Oh ! This is for me . ” You know ? But I was whole terrified of horse . My entire life . So , I ’m like , “ This could be interesting . ” This could be something that , that not only changes me as an creative person , but exchange me as a person .
Screen ranting : You were afraid of sawhorse your entire life ? So , you got to confront a lot of fears in this .
Jason Mitchell : Yes , unquestionably . Because I mean , this is a 900 - pound animate being , you know what I think of ? And they ’re prey animals , so they ’re like , they always spook passing well . But I had a really bad experience when I was like 16 , and one of my champion was race over by a Clydesdale knight , and it was just all bad . And I was like , “ You know what , mayhap horses ai n’t for me . ” You bonk what I mean ? [ LAUGHS ] .
Screen Rant : That ’s a full reason .
Jason Mitchell : Yeah . So , to get to the point where not only I can ride a buck , but I can actually go through the operation to put my hand on a waste Mustang , is groundbreaking for me .
Screen Rant : Well , they say never ferment with tike or brute and obviously there ’s a peck of Equus caballus in this . Can you talk to me about the experience and the training that you had to go through to be this like teacher for these horses ?
Jason Mitchell : Yeah . Well , before I even let to get on the sawbuck , maybe for like a week solid , they just had me get a line how to saddle the horse . Learning how to cleanse the stables , learning how to clean the buck , see how to communicate with the knight . Learning which side to walk on , and how to stay out of danger , or different thing like that . But it was something that I loved so much that I would always just , you know , kind of go the surplus mile . I was the guy who was cleaning all the horse stables after every sidereal day , and come in early to be able-bodied to ride , and trying a bunch of different thing , and it was really good . I had this guy ; he was an Australia guy actually . And he would always be like , “ All right , now when you get easy , okay , I want you to just get him trot along that wall . When I say Jason , just do about a 10 - human foot circle and get back right on that wall . I ’m not live to say much , I ’m just kick the bucket to say Jason . Okay ? ” [ LAUGHS ] But it was a good time . It was just a really good time . And everybody who had something to do with it was really proud . You know what I have in mind ? And thespian can always take the promiscuous route out . Like , “ Call in the double . ” But I did n’t want to be that bozo . And as a event , I believe we really , really arrive at the mark .
Screen blah : You really did . And also , another thing that ’s highlighted in this film , is all you guy have such stunning public presentation .
Jason Mitchell : Thank you .
Screen Rant : And you go to ferment with the legendary Bruce Dern . So , I have to ask , is there anything that you learned from him just by being on set with that man ?
Jason Mitchell : Absolutely . I learn that — Well , because a lot of times as a vernal actor , you ’re afraid of your own thought . You fuck what I entail ? Like , “ Would this be okay to do ? Is this not fine to do ? ” And he has such a bag of tricks . When you ’re in a setting with him , it ’s never run to be like you think it is . And afterwards , he ’s like , “ You know ? I wish this minor . This kidskin can dance . Every meter I give him something , he has n’t moved for it . I care this kid . ” And he was just so seasoned , and he had so much beloved for it . Cause we ’re out there with rubble and dirt and the buck . And he ’s kind of just this frail old man , but he was just always quick . There were times you had to like , cross him up with blankets , but he did n’t require to leave . He was totally down to stay . I love that guy .
Screen Rant : Can you talk to me about the relationship between Henry and Roman and how that educate ?
Jason Mitchell : Yeah , it was interesting . Because it was a good deal like me with a horse . It was like , you essay to just sort of like press this , this idea of loving somebody , or having this sorting of adhesion with somebody . But it ’s step to that . So , his relationship that he has with Henry is directly reflected through his horse . So , we ’re kind of like in this uncanny love triangle . And it was really , really good because [ Matthias Schoenaerts ] is so consecrate , he ’s so dedicated . And he ’s a guy who like , in the middle of the dark in the hotel room , he just [ KNOCKS ] , “ You know ? I was recall about this . So , what do you think about this ? ” And he ’s just really , really stick around it . And when I watched his public presentation , I ’m like , man , I cry like three or four time . I ’m like , “ Matthias , I know incisively what ’s go to hap . Why are you puddle me cry ? ” It ’s so good .
Screen Rant : You guys did an amazing task . Thank you so much for your clip .
Jason Mitchell : give thanks you , human race .
