Skyscraper
Rawson Thurber is a director that can get laugh to the big screen , but he can also bring action . His early film include the comediesDodgeball : A True Underdog StoryandWe’re the Millers . Thurber ’s most recent film isSkyscraper , an action megahit starring Dwayne Johnson . He antecedently worked with Johnson on the activity - comedyCentral Intelligence . Skyscraper rack up theaters July 13 , 2018 .
THE INSPIRATION FOR SKYSCRAPER
When talking about his inspiration forSkyscraper , Thurber said :
“ I grew up on former eighties , former nineties action . I ’ve want to make an action picture since I was eight - years - old . And Skyscraper is absolutely a making love alphabetic character tomovies like Die Hard and Towering Inferno , and we have a slight bit of the Fugitive thrown in there for good measure . Cliffhanger as well , Renny Harlin ’s image . So absolutely , it was designed from the soil up to be a throwback in that way . It ’s the sort of movie they do n’t make any longer . And I really loved them growing up and so I wanted to make one . ”
BUILDING THE PEARL
One of the most of import character inSkyscraperis the construction itself . To bring it to life sentence for the movie Thurber said :
“ I had a lot of help . I wanted to make a building , which is called The Pearl , in the film . It ’s its own character in the story . And basically , I took a metropolis and I grow it on its ear . We created this erect urban center , inside the improbable building in the human beings . And we consult with the lead architect on the Burj Khalifa , the current tallest building in the macrocosm , a man named Adrian Smith . And then I lease one of the greatest production designers of all fourth dimension , a guy cable discover Jim Bissel . He came in with his team and designed the edifice .
“ So that ’s really how we did it . It was part me saying , here are the three or five sort of action set pieces I recollect I want to do . What could be done realistically , blab to Adrian Smith and other architects . And how do we tie that all that together with a thematic look , that gives it the character that we need . And that was certainly Jim Bissel ’s purview and he did a great job . So , it was a lot of voguish masses . masses smarter than me helping me get this thing done . ”
WHY DWAYNE JOHNSON IS MISSING A LEG
Dwayne Johnson plays the lead character Will Sawyer . Sawyer is a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader that is now the head of protection for The Pearl . He is also an amputee . Director Rawson Thurber explained :
" For me , I ’d just never see an amputee as the hint in an action depiction before . It ’s never happened , as far as I know , in the account of cinema . And to me it seemed like it was about meter . And I ’m really majestic that this is the first movie that ’s done that , were the guy in the poster is an amputee . The more inquiry I did into it , the more inspiring the stories of amputees throughout the public that came to me . And what was really fascinating was that most of the amputee I let the cat out of the bag to , in fact all of them to a someone , say that they felt like they were a in effect person after their amputation then before . That they would a leg and start running marathons . Or they would lose an arm and go up Mount Everest as Jeff Glassbrenner did .
" It was a big inspiration for Dwayne , for the character Will Sawyer . And so that just seemed like , I do n’t bed , it just seemed like the correct affair to do . I sleep together that ’s kind of a strange way of saying it . And also , Dwayne and I talked a lot about that . The challenge for Will Sawyer is n’t below the knee , it was between the ear . A psychological challenge for him . A pitcher who ’s lost his fastball , a guy who does n’t think he can do it any longer . And he ’s forced to saddleback up because his family ’s in jeopardy .
" If you look at a picture like Cliffhanger , it has a inhuman open where the submarine fails . And it ’s that bankruptcy that opening a crisis or catastrophe , that haunts the zep and in the following narrative is the thing that heals the hero . The challenges that the sub faces and must overcome . So that ’s what we speak about a circle . And I guess the last thing I ’m really sort of proud of , as it relates to Dwayne being an amputee in the painting , is that we never really pander to it . Like he never fill takes the leg off and endeavor to sway it at somebody . It ’s just part of who he is . And in fact , if he did n’t have a prosthetic limb , there are certain parts of that moving picture he would n’t have been able to survive . ”
THURBER AND JOHNSON, TOGETHER AGAIN
WhileSkyscraperis the 2nd motion picture with Rawson Thurber and Dwayne Johnson working together , it will by all odds not be their last . They are team up again for the filmRed Notice . Thurber say :
" Yeah . That ’s come up , we begin pullulate April first . So that ’s properly around the box . I mean I ’m not the first soul to say this , I ’m sure I wo n’t get the last . Dwayne Johnson ’s just flat out the best . He ’s the good cooperator . He ’s so heavily working and he ’s so positive and it ’s so can do . He ’s essentially mishandle me for lick with any other player . So , I opine the in force question is , why does he work with me ? I ’m not sure . ”
Thurber continued with :
Dwayne Johnson and Chin Han in Skyscraper
“ I think what we share is that we both take the work earnestly but not ourselves seriously . So , we both cultivate really hard and we both– I ca n’t separate you the number of time in between a take or we ’re congeal something up , that Dwayne and I ’ll just sort of be standing next to each other catch the shot get set up , and we ’ll both look at each other and just go , how lucky are we ? How lucky are we that we get to do this ? I know I ’ve never lost that certain linear perspective . And certainly , Dwayne has n’t . And I think we both feel kind of lowly and grateful and hungry to do more . So , I think that ’s why we sort of have a similar mindset . ”
ACTION VS. COMEDY
Later , Thurber verbalize about how he went from organize comedies to writing and directing an action mechanism movie :
“ It ’s sort of interesting . I ’ve desire to make an action film since I was eight - years - old . And I tried my mitt at kind of getting hired to do a DC moving-picture show or Marvel photo . I never quite– I was always bridesmaid , never a Saint Bridget . ”
Thurber continued :
Dwayne Johnson and Chin Han in Skyscraper
“ And so , I just decided to write my own . I ’m like , screw it , I ’m doing my own affair . And then making an natural process photographic film , it was so much fun . So , so much merriment . In a set of ways , it was , I do n’t mean to quite say it like this , but in a lot of direction it was easier than making a clowning . And that ’s because you have so much financial backing . You have stunt coordinator and second unit directors and visual personal effects guru and storyboards and pre - vis . And you spill about it , you utter about it , you talk about it . You plan , plan , programme , plan , plan . And then you carry through . And the car either blows up or it does n’t . You do n’t go , you have sex , could that car blow up funnier ? That never bechance . But when you ’re doing a comedy , peculiarly when I write and direct everything that I do , or at least rewrite it . And when you ’re doing a drollery , if the jokes not working , that ’s on me and the actor . We ’re the only ones who can figure that out . There is no stunt coordinator for jokes . So , it ’s a much different challenge . You ’re a trivial bit more out on a ledge by yourself . ”
WE’RE THE MILLERS 2
Thurber ’s drollery , We’re the Millerswas a box post success . It starred Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis . A sequel is currently in the work . Thurber said :
“ I desire we get a luck to make it . So far , it ’s just been a existent challenge of scheduling . Jen is very in use and so is Jason and I just have n’t stopped make picture show . I ’m always writing and doing the next one , so it ’s really been an consequence of programing . But we have a marvellous script compose by Adam Sztykiel , who actually write Rampage among many others . He spell a really funny hand and it ’s fundamentally a very Miller ’s Christmas picture . Which I really kind of sexual love . But I ca n’t really say more than that . I hope we get to make it because it ’d be dandy to get the band back together . ”
