While in Singapore , Rachel also visits her college friend Peik Lin ( Awkwafina ) and touch much of Nick ’s extended family . However , while Nick ’s cousin-german Astrid ( Gemma Chan ) and second cousin Oliver ( Nico Santos ) take a liking to Rachel , Nick ’s mother Eleanor ( Michelle Yeoh ) is not impressed .
The picture show , which adapt much of Kwan ’s novel to the letter , also follows Astrid through her own relationship with her married man Michael Teo ( Pierre Png ) . Working as a bacillus - plot of land to Rachel and Nick ’s A - secret plan , Astrid learn Michael is cheating on her and eventually depart him . The electric arc mirror Rachel and Nick ’s own relationship since Michael ’s feelings of inadequateness compare to Astrid ’s family are part of the reason the marriage end - at the same time Rachel is struggling to come to terms with not find like she can live up to Eleanor ’s standard . In Kwan ’s later novels -China Rich GirlfriendandRich People Problems- Charlie and Astrid get back together and build a new life . However , in Chu ’s picture show version , fans do n’t get to any of Charlie and Astrid ’s relationship beyond a brief meeting in amid - credit shot forCrazy Rich Asians . So , why was Shum Jr. cut fromCrazy Rich Asians ?
In an interview withEW , Chu explained that Charlie in the beginning had a slightly larger function in the movie , appearing in a scene at Colin and Araminta ’s wedding where he danced with Astrid . In fact , that scene , which was eventually cut , appeared in the earlytrailers forCrazy Rich Asians , show it was film but removed from the movie during the editing process . Chu explained the decision to swerve Shum Jr ’s Charlie out of the master motion picture :
What we put in the film was great — they actually trip the light fantastic together — and it was so awe-inspiring , and Harry ’s so charming and so loveable . But the problem was , it made Astrid find like she was will Michael for Charlie , and we did n’t have enough elbow room to expand on the idea . We just had to ride out focussed . at long last it ’s about her independence , so that aspect was in there all the elbow room until the very destruction . When we took it out , Astrid ’s journeying became stronger . It was about her , not about her incur love .
Still , Shum Jr. does come along in the mid - credits scene forCrazy Rich Asians , where he and Astrid reconnect at the involvement political party that serves as the final aspect of the film right .
