It was Tom Cruise ’s idea to reveal Henry Cavill ’s August Walker was a scoundrel in theMission : Impossible - Fallouttrailers . While the action franchise is considered to be one of the warm movie series of the current era , it arguably has a bit of a weak patch in the antagonist department . Fortunately , that changed forFallout , which pitted Ethan Hunt ’s IMF team against not only returning foeman Solomon Lane ( continue his competition with Ethan fromRogue Nation ) , but also Walker . In a twist , the CIA assassinturns out to be one of Lane ’s Apostlesand wishes to realize Lane ’s goal .

Even before the existent film , audiences lie with something was up with the Walker character . lagger included footage that indicate he and Hunt would be on opposing sides , include the disclosure August had the office to hunt down a knave Ethan and snippets of the third act eggbeater chase . Normally , it ’s good to avoid drop plot pamperer in marketing so the audience is surprised when they watch the motion-picture show , but Cruise know from the start they require a different coming .

utter withEmpire , Falloutdirector Christopher McQuarrie talked about the decision to paint Cavill as the villain in previews , credit Cruise with the theme :

Tom Cruise and Sean Harris in Mission Impossible Fallout

" He [ Cruise ] goes , ' Here ’s the one matter I do n’t desire . I do n’t desire the consultation to be disappointed when they find out he ’s a forged hombre . ' He enunciate , ' If we set up Hunt and Walker wrong , the audience is going to be expecting them to be buddies at the end of the film . And , if we get to the end of the film and that ’s unsatisfying , we ’re dead . However you create this dynamic , just let them cognise that this is not the offset of a beautiful friendly relationship . This is all gon na terminate disadvantageously . ' And he was right . His instinct were absolutely right . "

Paramount initially seek to hide Walker ’s dead on target nature , but Cruise ( who is a producer on the motion picture ) convinced them to go through with his plan . McQuarrie justified the decision by explaining it gave the merchandising team freedom in crafting laggard and boob tube billet . If they tried to be too secretive , they would have a hand tied behind their backbone , unable to utilize footage that could go a long way in selling the film . The helicopter battle ( which is clear between Hunt and Walker in the second trailer ) became a centerpiece of the promotional campaign , and it ’s because Cruise had no qualms about the freebooter . To be fair , Paramount did throw August ’s connection to Lane back , make it seem like the CIA operative was just doing his job by firing at Hunt . This preserved one surprisal , though by then it was obvious Walker was a villain .

Fortunately , this did n’t have a negative impact on the film ’s response . Buoyed by fantabulous reviews , Falloutscoredthe   largest opening weekend inMission : Impossiblehistoryand is brace to be one of the summer ’s biggest hits . Hopefully , other studio take the correct lessons from this . Spoilers in trailers should be ward off most of the time , though they can be effective when used appropriately . In the cause ofFallout , it made mother wit . Trailers do n’t do anybody any right when they mismarket the project , and it ’s hard to have an action picture show without a right antagonist . Besides , most fans probably expectedthe mustached Cavillto be some kind of foe , rather than another member of Ethan ’s team .
